Ocean shipping container most commonly come in 20 and 40 foot sizes, with a somewhat higher version of the 40 foot available, known as the Hi-Cube. A standard 20 shipping container can hold up to a maximum of 32 cubic meters with a maximum payload of 47,700 lbs (21,000 kg). A 40-foot standard shipping container holds a volume of 65.5 cubic meters with a maximum payload of 58,500 lbs (27,300 kg). More and more shippers of household goods are using the larger Hi-Cube container with a volume of 76.5 cubic meters. Even though the legal container payload weight is actually less for this container, than for the standard 40 foot model, the extra ten cubic meters of volume can mean a lot for a large household goods shipment (personal effects shipments generally weigh less than commercial goods, which are generally more densely loaded).
